SafeTec User Conference Part 4: Illumina Highlights

by Tags: , , ,

Illumina’s Keith Rego (MS, CIH) told our user conference attendees that illumina’s global EHS program is in the early stages—and SafeTec’s collaboration helps them ensure that EHS supports Illumina’s mission instead of slowing it down.

Founded in 2000, Illumina aims “to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome.” Their genotyping systems have applications in agriculture, forensics, genetics, and various healthcare sectors. This company is moving fast, and SafeTec is helping Keith’s EHS team to build solutions that can grow with the company.

“SafeTec is allowing our troubleshooters to do their primary work instead of writing SDSs,” Keith noted. “Their systems are also helping us maximize SDS data, so we can make decisions proactively, not just reference SDSs for emergencies, archiving and compliance.”

Illumina completed a quality audit at SafeTec and ultimately chose us for:

  • Ease of use
  • Functionality
  • Compatibility with other systems
  • Flexibility
  • Cost-Efficiency
  • Robust systems and technology
  • Our own alignment with Illumina’s company values

Illumina’s immediate goals included streamlining SDS creation and access for injury and illness prevention, global regulation compliance, and improved hazard communication worldwide. “We start by looking at what we have, where we have it, and how we use it,” Keith said, then detailed some of the SDS initiatives Illumina and SafeTec are collaborating on:

  • Chemical container tracking
  • iFrame solution that allows Illumina to give their customers SDS access
  • Easy web-based Right-To-Know access for employees
  • Customized SDS request workflow design

These are vital components of the global Chemical Lifecycle Management project the SafeTec and Illumina team are working on today.
